Jefferson Pilot is a large NC insurance company. One of their holdings was WBTV & WBT radio for about 60 years…from the 40’s until 2000 or so when the properties were sold. Both stations had a huge heritage since they were the first broadcast stations in the Carolinas. WBT in 1922 and WBTV in 1949. If broadcasting was your vocation, those stations were the place to work, especially in the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s. If you got a job there, you hung on to it, and many retired from the company.
Tuesday, April 18th, we gathered for an alumni luncheon at WCCB TV, where Jim Babb & John Hutchinson hosted a JP party for the alums. Both Jim & John are long time veterans of the stations. It was a awesome surprise! About 125 former employees showed up, and when I walked in, I thought I was at the Shady Oaks Retirement Center – sliver hairs everywhere…except those guys that don’t have any…hugs and smiles a plenty. Some we hadn’t seen in 25 or 30 years! Some came a long distance to be here.
This was a rare event…souls connected, stories were told. Very few people are lucky enough to be a part of something like this. You don’t realize how good it was until you look back — for me 46 years ago. Enjoy the pictures. As always, thanks for listening and watching.
