This year Darlington Raceway is 70 years old…1950. The Korean War started in 1950 when Harry Truman was President. Darlington is one of the original tracks that birthed NASCAR into a Southern sport of immense proportions. The race is run this Sunday at 6pm. I’ve lived in the Carolinas more than 50 years and got my first taste of auto racing in 1968. I can’t count how many times I’ve driven by Darlington Raceway to and from the beach. The first race had 75 cars and they averaged 80 mph. A Plymouth won the race. Go ahead laugh. I did. Have we reached the autumn of car racing? There are no more Richard Petty’s or Dale Earnhardt’s or Junior Johnson’s. Thanks for the ride guys.
